Growing Up Where Addiction Was Normalized

Kevin grew up in Philadelphia in an environment where substance use was deeply woven into daily life. Addiction wasn’t something hidden or whispered about. It was visible, normalized, and modeled at home.

With parents struggling with addiction and a stepfather involved in drug dealing, Kevin was exposed to substances at an early age. What began as survival in a chaotic environment quickly became a cycle that followed him into adolescence and adulthood.

At just 16 years old, Kevin experienced a life-altering trauma when he was hit by a car in a drunk driving hit-and-run. Months of hospitalization and multiple surgeries introduced him to prescription opioids, intensifying an already fragile relationship with substances.

What followed was a familiar story for many people navigating addiction: escalating use, instability, homelessness, and disconnection.

A Leap of Faith That Changed Everything

Kevin never planned to leave Philadelphia.

But after entering treatment in his mid-20s, a chance connection led him west to Colorado. The move was a risk. A roll of the dice. And at first, it felt like a mistake.

The quiet of the Yampa Valley was a shock after the constant noise of city life. The darkness. The stillness. The unfamiliar pace.

Yet over time, something shifted.

What once felt empty began to feel grounding. What felt isolating became space to breathe, reflect, and heal. Colorado became the place where Kevin began building a life rooted in recovery.

Relapse, Accountability, and a Turning Point

Recovery was not immediate or linear.

Kevin experienced relapse after moving to Colorado, navigating grief, loss, and the reality that change takes time. What ultimately became a turning point wasn’t a dramatic moment or crisis. It was accountability.

While still struggling, Kevin enrolled in school to pursue social work. Learning about leadership, psychology, and systems of care forced him to confront the disconnect between who he wanted to be and how he was living.

On his 29th birthday, July 14, 2019, something clicked.

Kevin describes it as a quiet but profound realization: he could not move forward while holding onto the very thing that was keeping him small.

That day became his sobriety date.

Recovery, Family, and Boundaries

Today, Kevin speaks openly about the importance of boundaries, especially when navigating family dynamics shaped by addiction.

Living far from home allowed him to create healthier relationships with his parents, grounded in compassion without returning to dysfunction. Recovery, for Kevin, isn’t about cutting people off. It’s about choosing what supports healing.

As a husband and father, sobriety has opened the door to presence, stability, and self-care. Kevin shares honestly about how recovery requires balance, rest, and the ability to say no, even to good things.

From Lived Experience to Professional Purpose

Kevin’s personal journey led him naturally into social work.

After beginning his career as a child welfare caseworker, he joined The Health Partnership as a Care Coordinator, helping community members with Medicaid access and healthcare navigation. When the opportunity arose to support individuals transitioning out of jail, Kevin stepped in.

What began as one day a week became a calling.

Today, Kevin serves as Judicial Program Manager, helping lead care coordination efforts within the local jail system. His lived experience allows him to meet people with empathy, credibility, and hope at one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

“When people know you’ve been close to where they are, they listen differently,” Kevin shares. “They’re ready for something to change.”

The Power of Recovery Court and Community Support

Throughout the episode, Kevin highlights the importance of structured recovery programs, including Recovery Court, housing support, and coordinated services.

Recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when people are surrounded by resources, accountability, and community. Programs that recognize recovery as a process, not a punishment, change lives.

Kevin’s vision for the future includes expanding these supports so fewer people fall through the cracks during moments of transition.

Why This Story Matters

Kevin’s story reflects the heart of The Health Partnership’s mission: meeting people where they are, honoring lived experience, and building systems of care rooted in dignity and hope.

Recovery is possible. Healing is not linear. And community support makes all the difference.

If you or someone you love is navigating addiction, recovery, or transition, you are not alone.
